ROCK GOSPEL: SHINE LIKE IT DOES
ROCK GOSPEL: SHINE LIKE IT DOES
By INXS
A Song About the Light of Christ
This is the power
Since time began
Every single hour
That we have known
And from each moment
All that is left
Sleep of the innocent
Just one desire
Shine like it does
Into every heart
Shine like it does
And if you're looking
You will find it
This is the story
Since time began
There will come a day
When we will know
Shine like it does
Into every heart
Shine like it does
And if you're looking
You will find it.

There's nothing really profound about these lyrics. They are simple and beautiful and hopeful. When I listen to it, I feel the fellowship of suffering, comfort, and hope. Combined with the music, the words evoke a mood of bittersweetness– perhaps the singer is struggling and hoping for better times; looking for light in a dark world.
Well, GOOD NEWS! The light is inside of every one of us, lit by Our Creator, emanating from His divine source.
“For the word of the Lord is truth, and whatsoever is truth is light, and whatsoever is light is Spirit, even the Spirit of Jesus Christ. And the Spirit giveth light to every man that cometh into the world; and the Spirit enlighteneth every man through the world, that hearkeneth to the voice of the Spirit.” -D&C 84:45-46.
“...That he might be in all and through all things, the light of truth; Which truth shineth. This is the light of Christ.” -D&C 88:6-7
The Bible Dictionary teaches us this important detail: “The light of Christ should not be confused with the Holy Ghost. The light of Christ is not a person. It is an influence that comes from God and prepares a person to receive the Holy Ghost.” And everybody gets this gift!
“[John the Baptist] was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.” -John 1:8-9
We are never left alone in a dark world. There is a light inside of us, lit by Our Source, that will guide us to better times and places if we follow and trust it.
This reminds me of a song I learned from a record I had when I was 6 years old. The record was called “My Turn on Earth” and the song was “Look For The Light.” This gospel musical has since gone out of fashion and production, but I will always be grateful to Carol Lynn Pearson for writing lyrics that serve as the foundation for my testimony of fundamental gospel doctrines. The chorus says:
“Look for that bright little right little light inside Helping you to see your way
Look for that bright little right little light inside Growing brighter day by day
It will show you the road that you should take And it will never grow dim
Just keep it in touch with your Father above Because it was lit by Him.”
Ahhhh. This song feels like a hug. I hope you've found your light. Shine on, friends!
