ROCK GOSPEL: LOVE IS THE 7TH WAVE
ROCK GOSPEL: Love is the 7th Wave
By Sting
In the empire of the senses
You're the queen of all you survey
All the cities all the nations
Everything that falls your way
There is a deeper world than this
That you don't understand
There is a deeper world that this
Tugging at your hand
Every ripple on the ocean
Every leaf on every tree
Every sand dune in the desert
Every power we never see
There is a deeper wave than this
Swelling in the world
There is a deeper wave than this
Listen to me girl
Feel it rising in the cities
Feel it sweeping over land
Over borders, over frontiers
Nothing will its power withstand
There is no deeper wave than this
Rising in the world
There is no deeper wave than this
Listen to me girl
All the bloodshed all the anger
All the weapons all the greed
All the armies all the missiles
All the symbols of our fear
There is a deeper wave than this
Rising in the world
There is a deeper wave than this
Listen to me girl
At the still point of destruction
At the center of the fury
All the angels all the devils
All around us, can't you see?
There is a deeper wave than this
Rising in the land
There is a deeper wave than this
Nothing will withstand
I say LOVE is the seventh wave
I say LOVE is the seventh wave.

Back in 2022, I read “The Law of Love” by Steve Young and I freaking loved it. He put into words a big, long lesson the Holy Spirit has been trying to teach me since summer 1993, and really maybe all my life. I was grateful to read about someone else having this experience; grateful he was able to find the words. Then in fall of 2023, the amazing Adam Miller gave a talk at Faith Matters’ Restore Conference that referenced many of the ideas from Young mixed with Miller’s own experience in learning that love is not a reward, it’s the law. It’s the power that governs everything we know and the power by which we have our being and our salvation. It is the how and the why of everything our Heavenly Parents do.
I combined this shift in my thinking with new mindfulness and meditation practices in spring 2024. For Easter, I gave myself the gift of reading and doing Thomas McConkie’s book, At.One.Ment. As an anxious empath, I have spent my life trying to feel and notice less, not more, and the chance to be truly still, and quiet my monkey mind has proved a nearly impossible task. I have always lived in a state of near overwhelm because my senses are constantly taking in too much, especially my 6th sense, and my monkey mind runs at a constant quiet chatter, giving my nervous system a persistent buzz that never stops. Though I’ve been able to point this activity in a positive direction and find rest in solitude, I’ve never quite mastered the skill of meditating in stillness or being fully present and mindful in daily life. Doing McConkie’s practices with an extra measure of gratitude has created a massive shift in my spiritual life. The shift has had a beautiful ripple effect through all my thoughts and actions. Things seem the same on the outside, but everything hits different now and I feel the constant buzzing is more of a hum that can finally shut down into focus and stillness when I am getting centered each day. It is replaced with what can only be described as a holy wave of gratitude and peace I’ve never experienced before. With this comes more patience and love than I've ever been able to muster before, and also the ability to be moved to tears by the slightest kindness or message of truth that resonates with this new vibe. I sound like a full on hippie, but it’s all about peace and love these days– peace not as the world giveth, and love as the law; love as charity that truly never fails.
So in this altered state, I find myself driving in the beautiful canyon between my home and Bozeman, with the windows down and the radio up, enjoying spring in all its glory, with this new vibe in my life. The radio plays “Love is the Seventh Wave” by Sting, which I haven’t heard in years, and as I sing along I realize it’s practically scripture! It’s everything I’ve been learning in a song! It’s the “great” of the coming Great & Dreadful days. When Sting sings, “There is a deeper wave than this,” I take “This” to mean all the darkness and evil that’s filling our world. But I also take “this” to mean every beautiful and good thing we know in this world, too; as good and beautiful as it is, there is something even better coming. “There is a deeper wave than this/ rising in the land/ There is a deeper wave than this/ Nothing will withstand/ I say LOVE is the seventh wave.” Though the sixth wave might be darkness and evil– “the still point of destruction”-- the seventh wave will wash it all away.
“My problem is that all along I have been telling myself a ridiculous story about how love is a reward when in truth, love is a law. Love cannot be deserved. Love is always a commandment to be obeyed, full stop, and never a reward to be earned. Love is a verb, not a noun. Love is a work I must join, not a reward I can get. Love requires my participation, not my perfection. THIS IS THE SECRET, hidden from the foundation of the world. THIS is the good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ.” -Adam Miller
